Things to do in South Austin

Looking for things to do in South Austin?

You are not alone.

Many of Independence Barber Co.'s friends and clients come from areas outside of South Austin, some traveling over an hour to get a haircut! We are honored by this, and want everyone to enjoy their time in the area.

South Austin has a lot to offer, and we want to provide recommendations for local businesses and other things to do while you are visiting our favorite part of Austin - South ATX.

Menchaca Rd. (formerly Manchaca Rd.)

Independence Barber Co. is located at 11410 Menchaca Rd., this road continues on for one mile South until 1626 brings the road to an end. From 1626 to Ben White, you can find an array of businesses from bars, cafes, restaurants to book stores, and clothing shops.

south ATX

Starting with the furthest point South on Menchaca Rd, you will find Giddy UpsIf you are looking for that old Austin feel with honky tonk, cheap drinks and friendly people, this is your place.

A short distance from Giddy Ups you will find Brite Ideas

Brite Ideas is Austin's most reliable resource for Aquaponic, Hydroponic, Organic, and Biological growing systems.

Kids bored, feeling the need for some exercise?

Austin Roller Rink is just around the corner.

Just down the road you can find an array of food trucks, starting with the world famous Valentina's Tex Mex BBQ.

Next door you will also find Las Abuelas, Mediterranean Cuisine  (be sure to ask for their rice), and Dave's Tacos.

jacobs liquors

On the North side of the food trucks you will find us (Independence Barber Co.), with Jacob's Liquors and Reliv Organix just next door.  In the mood for a cold beer on your back porch? The Bread Basket  has one of the largest selections in the area.

If you go about a mile and a half North on Menchaca Rd. from our shop, you will find yourself in the middle of endless fun.

Once upon a time, people came South of Ben White just to visit Indian Roller (go for Metal Mondays, stay for Geeks Who Drink) and Moontower Saloon (yes they have volleyball courts).

However.. today... although they still come to visit these great venues (that boast food trucks, cocktails and live music), there is a new district building on our street. You can also find SABG (South Austin Beer Garden) with 50 incredible beers on tap, Lustre Pearl South (with pop up markets, events and DRAG QUEEN BINGO!), Armadillo Den who has live music EVERY night, and across the street, with my favorite burger- Brick's Pub

This is just a small sample of what is available on Menchaca Rd, (within a stones throw of us). If you go further North on this road, there is so much more available to you (more info coming soon).

If you are a bit more on the adventurous side and feel like exploring our surrounding streets, take yourself another two miles South of our shop and find Hair Metal Salon. Hair Metal is your local salon (housed in our previous location on Twin Creeks Rd.), and the crew provide stellar color and styling services (we didn't forget about your needs ladies)!
Just down the street on 1626, visit Manchaca Springs Saloon , grab a cold beer, listen to some live music and check out the array of vintage and antique decor in South Austin’s coolest outdoor gathering place.

texas keeper South AustinIf you are feeling a bit more mellow and just want to relax in nature with a charcuterie board and a glass of local made cider, don't miss Texas Keeper Cidery, our areas best kept secret.

If you haven't spent much time on the South side of Austin, do your self a favor and check out this incredible part of town. While the South is growing like most of the city, it is thriving with locally owned small businesses (rather than big corporate names) that give you that "old" Austin feel.
