INDEPENDENCE BARBER CO. BRINGS COMMUNITY TO SOUTH AUSTIN
New Barbershop takes the chore out of grooming.

AUSTIN, TEXAS April 28, 2021
Independence Barber Co. is a new barber and retail shop in South Austin. Originally opened in September 2019 on Twin Creeks Rd. in Manchaca by owner Heather Manto, in January 2021 the shop relocated to 11410 Menchaca Rd. in Austin. Manto aims to fill a gap in the market by offering modern cuts with traditional service in a relaxed and comfortable environment.

Heather describes what to expect at Independence Barber Co.:

“We want to take the chore out of getting a haircut so it’s something to look forward to. Our clients build a trusting relationship with their barber; they know they’ll get a good cut every time so they can relax. I love it when a client tells me how much they love the environment and they have found their new spot. When you walk in, you find yourself taking a step back in time; the front of our shop houses an area where you can shop for unusual antiques, art, novelties, oddities and curiosities. We also have an enormous selection of grooming products such as beard oils and balms, pomades, and shave items. Some of the products we sell are our own, and they are all natural and made personally by my own hands.”

All Independence barbers are hired and overseen directly by Heather and must hold a Texas barber’s license. The lineup includes N.Y. native Daren Ramos, Texas raised Woody Aguilar and Mari Torres, and Heather herself who was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Heather explains, “by keeping the staff small I am able to maintain quality control. This also prevents a revolving door which gives clients a feeling of familiarity as they see the same faces and get to know everyone personally”.

The look of the shop was curated by Heather and is inspired by a Victorian laboratory; the walls are lined with taxidermy, a classic library book case, and chandeliers hang from the ceiling at the front of the shop. Grooming products are displayed throughout on black and gold shelves. At the back of the shop, clients sit in vintage inspired barber’s chairs that are situated in a way to encourage conversation. A Television is mounted high on the wall, sound off, with extreme sports on the screen. Music is often a topic of conversation; the playlists keep things interesting. The speakers play a mix of heavy metal, jazz, punk rock, country, and blues; nothing is off limits and everyone will find something that appeals to their senses.

Heather again:
“I want clients to feel well looked after, like they would in a member’s club. They know they’re getting the best but it’s enjoyable, not intimidating or stuffy. We never want anyone to feel uncomfortable walking through our doors.”

Each client receives a complimentary beverage, the red vintage inspired refrigerator is always stocked full of cold beer. A variety of whiskey is available for a tasting, and fresh espresso is available on request. Filtered water is available for those who just want to keep it simple. Independence Barber Co. can’t be missed; there is a hand painted sign by Austin legend Gary Martin displayed at the street, and the large hand painted windows house an unusual display that stays true to the Austin Weird motto. Independence Barber Co. is just a few steps away from Valentina’s famous BBQ, and is situated at the end of a small strip of locally owned shops. The small strip includes Independence Barber Co.,  Jacob’s Liquor, Reliv Organix, and South Austin’s go to beer and wine stop, The Bread Basket.

Owner Heather Manto is a disabled U.S. Army veteran and resides in South Austin. First responders and military always receive a discount for services.
